International Women’s Day discussion

IWD Panel discussion

International Women's Day panel

To help mark this year’s International Women’s Day, the Workers Party has hosted a panel discussion on ‘Women and Recession’.

The event was held in the Black Box, Hill Street Belfast on Monday evening with a panel consisting of: Patricia McKeown (UNISON), Breedagh Hughes (Royal College of Midwives), Lily Kerr (NI Social Care Council),  and Gemma Dowds (Workers Party).

Amongst the contributions and comments the audience heard that, compared to the last recession, women are making a greater financial contribution than ever before to family incomes and lone parents – 90 per cent of whom are women – now make up a quarter of all
families.   More women than ever are therefore supporting families on their wages.

Since the start of the 2008 the female redundancy rate has increased by 2.3 percentage points, almost double the rate of male increase.
